Course Day: Internship Discrimination in the Research University Context
Sign up for November 2nd!
Internship discrimination is a persistent problem, including in research university education (WO). When looking for an internship (or a comparable practical assignment at an external or internal organisation), students encounter unequal treatment, exclusion and bias. As an education professional, you may find these situations difficult to recognise. Or you may be close to these stories without always having a clear sense of what you can do.
That is why, as part of the national programme against internship discrimination in higher education, we are organising a course day especially for education professionals at research universities. A day on which we take a closer look together at recognising internship discrimination and at what you can concretely do about it, in your own role and within your own university or programme.
This course day has a national scope: professionals from different universities will take part. That makes it a great opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences with colleagues who face the same issues in other contexts.
What to expect
During the day, we will cover:
- recognising internship discrimination and related forms of undesirable behaviour during internships, in the various forms in which they occur;
- the role you can play as an education professional;
- concrete courses of action you can put into practice in your work straight away;
- exchanging experiences with colleagues from other universities.

National Programma against Internship Discrimination in Higher Education
The National Programme puts into practice the shared ambition of the VH (Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences), UNL (Universities of the Netherlands), the student organisations ISO and LSVb, the Ministries of OCW and SZW, and the employers’ organisations VNO-NCW and MKB-Nederland to join forces in tackling internship discrimination in higher education. This ambition was turned into action after these organisations signed the manifesto against internship discrimination in higher education in 2022. By signing the manifesto, the organisations jointly declared their responsibility for combating internship discrimination, with each of them taking action in its own way.
The programme was drawn up by ECHO, Center for Diversity Policy, with input from the signatories of the manifesto, commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (SZW).
