On Monday, November 9, 2026 <\/strong>, ECHO, the Center of Expertise on Diversity, in collaboration with The Hague University of Applied Sciences, will host <\/strong>the fourth national conference on combating internship discrimination in higher education.<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

During the annual conference, we bring together employers, education professionals, policymakers, students, and other stakeholders to share experiences and jointly explore next steps in addressing internship discrimination.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This edition will focus on employers. While previous editions primarily focused on the role of education and students, this year\u2019s edition centers on the question of how employers can contribute to a fair, accessible, and socially safe internship market. <\/span><\/h2>\n

Ercan B\u00fcy\u00fck\u00e7if\u00e7i (1983) focuses on anti-racism and equity as a Strategic Advisor on Inclusion and Researcher. He has been working at The Hague University of Applied Sciences since 2010, and from 2023 through the end of 2026, he served as a member of the National Advisory Committee on Diverse and Inclusive Higher Education and Research (DIHOO). Together with partners both within and outside the university, he leads various educational projects at the intersection of anti-racism and justice, including The Hague Approach to Equal Internship Opportunities. In his approach, he emphasizes institutional responsibility. With his keynote address, \u201cInternship Equity Begins with Acknowledgment,\u201d on November 9, Ercan will therefore invite the audience to engage in deeper reflection and take responsibility for their actions. <\/span><\/p>\n

How can academic programs contribute to a socially safe internship environment? In this workshop, Lorine van Loon and Py Tswang Jin (HvA) will present the tools developed by the working group <\/span>Addressing Age Discrimination<\/i> has developed to facilitate discussions about social safety during internships. Participants explore real-world experiences and dilemmas and work together to expand the range of responses available to teachers, internship coordinators, and policymakers. The session offers concrete starting points for identifying discrimination and exclusion at an early stage and embedding solutions sustainably within education and internship supervision. <\/span><\/div>\n

Internships are an important stepping stone to the job market, but opportunities for internships are not evenly distributed. Internship discrimination is a persistent and complex problem involving many stakeholders with different perspectives and interests. Even when the problem is recognized, education professionals often still feel at a loss as to how to address it. In addition, existing tools and interventions often do not align well with the specific challenges faced by a particular program or sector and are therefore frequently underutilized. <\/p>\n

Fontys University of Applied Sciences, ROC Nijmegen Vista College, and Summa have used funding from the National Research Coordination Agency to develop an approach that allows academic programs themselves (in mixed teams of faculty and students) to work toward developing an appropriate intervention tailored to their specific situation. This approach was tested during the past school year. <\/p>\n

In this workshop, we\u2019d like to give you an overview of the background and implementation of this approach. The workshop provides an opportunity to review the materials we\u2019ve developed and discuss how they can help your program combat internship discrimination. <\/p>\n

The workshop is part of the \u201cEqual Internship Opportunities\u201d collaborative project in the Arnhem-Nijmegen region and offers concrete insights for professionals who want to work toward creating fair, context-sensitive internship opportunities in the Netherlands. There is no single, simple solution to internship discrimination. As an educational institution or program, how do you choose the right approach and interventions? With the \u201cTackling Internship Discrimination\u201d tool, we offer institutions and programs a nationwide overview of various possible interventions and how they address the problem. This tool is currently under development, and with this session, we aim to provide an opportunity for input from the community. During the session, we\u2019ll share best practices and gather examples to help develop the tool. <\/span><\/p>\n

Second, members are motivated to contribute to the well-being and performance of the group as a whole as well as that of individual members. Khaled Tamimy – Social Technology Lab<\/em><\/p>\n

Khaled Tamimy is the founder and CEO of Social Technology Lab (STL), an AI research and development company focused on building intelligent infrastructure for societal sectors such as education, health, and climate. As a mathematical physicist, data ethicist, and social entrepreneur, he examines the role of technology and society in his workshop. Together with the workshop participants, he explores whether AI is actually an opportunity or a threat when it comes to the issue of age discrimination. <\/p>\n
