The ECHO Award highlights students with a non-western background in Dutch higher education who distinguish themselves through academic excellence, leadership, and above all their dedication to creating a more equitable society.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Each year, ECHO Centre for Diversity Policy invites universities of applied sciences and research universities in the Netherlands to nominate socially engaged students for the ECHO Award.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Candidates for an ECHO Award are students from underrepresented groups who demonstrate visible social impact, contribute to policy and systemic change, and show leadership qualities. Read more about the criteria<\/a> here.<\/p>\n

All nominated students automatically become part of the ECHO Ambassadors Network<\/a>. This network now includes around 500 students, as well as young and senior professionals, who have been nominated for the ECHO Award over the past \u00b125 years. It is a community of like-minded people who are connected through ECHO, while each contributing in their own way and context to diversity, inclusion, and equity in society.<\/p>\n

The winners are selected by an independent jury and are given the opportunity to participate in a fully funded Summer Course at UCLA in the United States (subject to change).<\/p>\n

Reform of the ECHO Award as of 2025<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Starting in 2025, we are introducing a renewed structure in which three ECHO Awards will be presented to students who stand out for the impact they create on urgent social issues.<\/p>\n

In recent years, we have seen that students contribute to social change in a variety of ways. While the categories used in previous years (ECHO Award for Universities of Applied Sciences, ECHO Award for Research Universities, Beta Technology Award, and Law & Tax Award) have been valuable, the current era calls for a more flexible framework. In the new setup, the HBO (Universities of Applied Sciences) and WO (Research Universities) categories<\/strong> will remain, but we are introducing a third: the Current Affairs Award <\/em>(Actualiteiten Award)<\/strong>. With this award, the jury can think across categories and respond to the most pressing social developments of the coming years.<\/p>\n

Why the ECHO Award?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In the early 2000s, the ECHO Award was established as a counter-narrative to the problematization of diversity. The ECHO Award highlights how new generations with diverse backgrounds contribute to social justice, innovation, and inclusive progress. In doing so, the Award is not only a recognition of individual talent but also a driver of social change.<\/p>\n

Since then, the ECHO Award has served as a catalyst for mobilizing institutions around diversity and inclusion. By celebrating the achievements of students of color and students with a refugee background, the Award underscores the importance of diversity and inclusion in higher education.<\/p>\n

Through its Ambassadors Network, the ECHO Award also builds a diverse community of young, like-minded leaders who empower one another and create impact together.<\/p>\n

The Award winners will be picked by an independent jury headed by Kathleen Ferrier, Chairman of the UNESCO Commission. The independent jury consists of mainly our partners Boston Consulting Group, Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, and Dutch Railways.<\/span><\/p>\n

Elk jaar kunnen professionals van instellingen voor hoger onderwijs getalenteerde studenten nomineren voor de ECHO Award. De ECHO Award is een initiatief van ECHO, Expertisecentrum voor Diversiteitsbeleid dat studenten van kleur in het hoger onderwijs en jonge professionals eert voor hun uitstekende inspanningen en werk dat bijdraagt aan de bevordering van diversiteit en inclusie. \u00a0De prijs cre\u00ebert kansen voor studenten om een gelijkwaardige uitgangspositie te bereiken en draagt bij aan een dialoog die maatschappelijke uitdagingen erkent en de kracht van diversiteit illustreert.<\/p>

Toen de ECHO Award meer dan 20 jaar geleden voor het eerst werd uitgereikt, was diversiteit nog een nieuw thema. Verhalen van studenten met een niet-westerse achtergrond* waren nauwelijks zichtbaar en het maatschappelijk debat ging vooral over diversiteitsproblemen. Inmiddels is Diversiteit &Inclusie mainstream geworden en cre\u00ebert de huidige generatie studenten steeds meer ruimte om onderwerpen als institutioneel racisme te bespreken. Voor de ECHO Award 2023 is de jury daarom op zoek naar kandidaten die de volgende stap kunnen zetten in het maatschappelijk debat en actief hun rol als ECHO-ambassadeur gaan opnemen.<\/p>

De winnaars worden beloond met een volledig verzorgde Summercourse aan de UCLA in de Verenigde Staten in 2024. Ze worden gekozen door een onafhankelijke jury onder voorzitterschap van Kathleen Ferrier, voorzitter van de Nederlandse UNESCO Commissie.<\/p>
